As dogs and cats continue to live longer healthier lives, blood and urine testing for the elderly pet becomes ever more important. These tests often measure the function of organs and systems more vulnerable to age such as thyroid, kidney, liver and blood sugar levels. Often dismissed as simple signs of aging, many conditions can be detected, controlled or even reversed well before it is too late or simply too expensive to remedy. Mild changes in weight, slight increases in water intake or appetite, occasional urinary accidents in the house, intermittent vomiting or diarrhea, or just a reduction in activity can be early indications of disease and can be detected.
