Initial “one-time” testing for all newly acquired or adopted cats and kittens kept indoors and yearly testing for all cats with outdoor access is strongly recommended. Both viral infections can go undetected for several years before causing health problems while still being allowed to infect and spread to other cats and kittens. Kittens can also be infected in the womb prior to birth and carry the infection during growth and development only to become ill in the early years of life.
Many shelters and rescue groups do not routinely test for these viral infections prior to adoption but can be tested for here prior to a required spay or neuter. Vaccinations against these viral infections do not reduce the need for yearly testing nor do they alter test results when administered. If you have taken care of your indoor cat for several years but do not know if he or she has ever been tested, please call to schedule a test with results often available before you leave.
